MALTA -- GlobalFoundries plans to add 90,000 square feet of space to the $4.2 billion, 1.3 million-square-foot semiconductor plant the company is building in the Luther Forest Technology Campus, state economic development officials said today.
The added "clean room" space will come at a cost of $75 million -- with an additional $15.8 million in state support -- and was officially announced today by the company at a computer trade show in Taiwan, according to Empire State Development.
Construction on the plant, known as Chip Fab 8, began last July.
Just last month, GlobalFoundries challenged the town's $160 million assessment on what's been built so far, arguing it could only get pennies on the dollar if it were forced to actually sell the partially complete plant on the open market.
The added clean room space will bring the total to 300,000 square feet and require an additional 500,000 manhours of construction, ESD said.
The state has already pledged up to $1.2 billion in public support for the project, a sum that has drawn criticism. Officials say it will create about 1,400 new jobs.
