AMD Q1 loss widens to $416M

The Business Review (Albany)

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Tuesday reported a first quarter loss of $416 million, or 66 cents a share, widened from a loss of $364 million, or 60 cents a share in the same period last year.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD (NYSE:AMD) had $1.177 billion in revenue, down 21 percent from the year-ago quarter's $1.5 billion

The company's loss included an unfavorable impact of $22 million, or 4 cents a share.

Analysts had expected, on average, a loss of 66 cents a share on $1 billion in revenue.

AMD owns 34.2 percent of GlobalFoundries, a company that is building a $4.2 billion computer chip plant in Saratoga County. Advanced Technology Investment Co., an investment company wholly owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, owns the rest. Both companies have equal representation on the board.

AMD is GlobalFoundries' first customer. GlobalFoundries also will operate AMD’s two existing chip fabs in Dresden, Germany. Its goal is to acquire one or two more customers this year, and several more over the next three to five years. It is possible that Intel, a competitor to which AMD places a distant second, could be among those customers.
